With Microsoft’s acquisitions like Activision Blizzard and Bethesda joining its Xbox Game Studios lineup, the tech giant has become a formidable force in the gaming world. This vast collection of developers means a host of projects is brewing, although some games, such as Rare’s Everwild and Undead Labs’ State of Decay 3, have been simmering for quite some time without much to show yet.
In a chat with Xbox Era, Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft Gaming, didn’t seem too fazed by worries about these projects being stuck in development limbo. He argued that due to Microsoft’s extensive reach, they have the luxury to allow studios the necessary time to perfect their games.
When pressed about which upcoming first-party games he’s most looking forward to, Spencer highlighted State of Decay 3, Everwild, and a new project in the works from Double Fine Productions, led by Tim Schafer.
Spencer expressed his enthusiasm for the projects, saying, "I’ve got a soft spot for the State of Decay series, going back to its original release." He continued, "Double Fine’s work, particularly the way Tim engages with his team, is impressive. Plus, having recently visited Rare, it’s encouraging to witness the strides the team is making with Everwild."
He did, however, acknowledge the radio silence regarding these titles. "Yeah, it’s been a while," he admitted. "But we’re fortunate to grant these teams the time they need, thanks to the diverse lineup we’re managing. It’s a great feeling, something Matt [Booty] and I have visualized for ages, and we’re thrilled to actually reach this point where we can afford such patience."
Indeed, Microsoft isn’t pressed to hasten any game launches. Its 2025 lineup is already teeming with promising titles: Obsidian’s Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, id Software’s Doom: The Dark Ages, Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight, Playground Games’ Fable, as well as Team Ninja and PlatinumGames’ Ninja Gaiden 4. Let’s not forget the expected appearance of a new Call of Duty installment.
Spencer also hinted at a visit to The Coalition, creators of Gears of War, to check out the prolonged development of Gears of War: E-Day. The last chapter of this iconic series hit the shelves back in 2019. "I’ll be there next week," he shared, clearly excited. "It’s always a thrill when they welcome me into their space."
