Microsoft is shaking things up with the latest Windows 11 update by refining the way Task Manager calculates CPU usage, aligning it more closely with the capabilities of popular third-party tools.
Recognizing the limitations of Task Manager’s current performance metrics, Microsoft is set to release an update that changes how CPU utilization is calculated. This modification, adopted from the practices of other monitoring tools, aims to make Task Manager a more effective resource for users.
In a recent announcement, Microsoft stated, “We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.”
While the exact details on how these calculations will change are still under wraps, what’s clear is that Task Manager’s approach will become more unified. This means that whether you’re looking at the Processes, Performance, or Users pages, you’ll see consistent data, eliminating discrepancies between Task Manager and third-party platforms. This update could reduce the reliance on additional software like HWINFO for accurate CPU monitoring. However, we’ll have to be patient as we await the rollout of this update.
For those who prefer the current method of calculating CPU utilization, Microsoft isn’t leaving them out in the cold. They’ve introduced an optional “CPU Utility” column on the “Details” tab, allowing users to stick with the familiar setup if they choose. As of now, these enhancements are part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, incorporated into the 24H2 update. Although these features will be gradually introduced to all users, it’s reassuring to see Microsoft dedicated to enhancing the user experience.
