The latest update for Windows 11 has caused a bit of a stir by unexpectedly making several Ubisoft games, like Star Wars Outlaws, difficult to play.
Isn’t it frustrating how we rely on our computers for nearly everything, only to face unexpected issues when a minor update throws a wrench in the works? Although gaming isn’t the most critical activity, this recent Windows 11 update has certainly given Ubisoft game enthusiasts a reason to be peeved. Gamers started facing trouble with certain Ubisoft titles after the update last week, and now Microsoft has stepped in to admit that it’s the update’s fault—not your computer’s.
Microsoft provided some clarity in a post, stating, “After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games.” The problems include games freezing during launch, loading, or gameplay, and in some cases, causing a black screen. They’ve even listed which games have been impacted: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
To address this, Microsoft has put a safeguard in place. “To protect your Windows update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with these games installed,” they announced. This means those affected devices won’t receive the version 24H2 update through the normal Windows Update channel. Microsoft advises against trying to manually update using the Installation Assistant or media creation tools until a fix is crafted.
On the brighter side, Ubisoft has released a temporary hotfix to tackle the problems. However, they mentioned, “you may experience some performance issues while we work on a more permanent fix. As soon as it is ready, we will let you know.” So maybe it’s time to dive into the pile of other games waiting in your library until everything is sorted out.
