Since the smashing success of Hogwarts Legacy early in 2023, there hasn’t been much to cheer about at Warner Bros. Games. Sure, Mortal Kombat 1 has made a respectable mark with its stunning, brutal fight scenes. However, the company has had to swallow the bitter pill of Multiversus’s lackluster relaunch and, most glaringly, the colossal failure of Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League. Now, the head honcho at WB Games, President David Haddad, is heading for the exit.
Even in light of Warner Bros. Games’ recent troubles, it’s crucial not to overlook the solid titles overseen by Haddad during his decade-long tenure as president. We can’t forget gems like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Injustice 2, and top-tier Mortal Kombat entries like MK11 and the latest MK1. Although it might not have won over the critics completely, Hogwarts Legacy still stands out as one of WB’s biggest triumphs. Yet, the high-profile flops can’t be overlooked. Despite Rocksteady’s reputation for crafting outstanding single-player experiences, they delivered Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League as a live-service punching bag, only to find new content fizzling out within a year of its launch.
Though WB’s catalog boasts some stellar fighting games, Multiversus, which had the potential to be a standout with its blend of various IPs, hasn’t lived up to expectations. While the game initially attracted a tidal wave of players during its early access and relaunch phases, keeping them engaged has been a challenge.
Now, with Haddad poised to leave, he shares, “It has been an absolute pleasure working on and building our iconic gaming franchises, and I will continue to be an enthusiastic supporter of this talented team’s future endeavors,” as reported by Variety. “I look forward to working on the next chapter of my career and will always be grateful for my time with Warner Bros. Games.”
Haddad will hang around WB for another three months to ensure a smooth transition for his eventual replacement.
Looking ahead, the outlook for WB Games seems a bit sparse—unless they’re sitting on some unannounced titles set for release this year. Despite this looming concern, another executive acknowledged this in his farewell to Haddad.
“David has thoughtfully and purposefully chosen a time when our release schedule is lighter, which will help minimize disruption to our ongoing projects and strategic plans. This will allow the team to smoothly prepare for its next record-breaking title,” explains JB Perrette, CEO and President of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming and Games.
Warner Bros. has already earmarked a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy as a high priority, indicating that it’s on the way, though probably a couple of years out at least. The other sizeable project on the horizon is the Wonder Woman game developed by Monolith, known for Middle-earth games, a project that has been shrouded in silence since its initial reveal back in 2021.
