War Thunder is taking a bold step into new territory, expanding its battlegrounds to include AI-controlled infantry units. Traditionally, the game has focused on the mastery of armored tanks, formidable warships, and agile aircraft. But now, players are about to experience something completely different with the introduction of infantry troops—albeit initially as part of a clever April Fool’s Day theme centered around World War 1.
Despite its usual focus on vehicles from World War 2 and beyond, War Thunder has mixed things up with its latest limited-time event called ‘The Great War.’ This new mode transports you back to the Western Front of World War 1, featuring a fresh lineup of ground and aerial vehicles from that period.
Throughout this week-long event, players can unlock seven newly added vehicles by accomplishing specific objectives for both the Allied Powers—namely Britain, France, and the USSR—and the German Empire. These vehicles will become part of your permanent War Thunder arsenal, available even after the event concludes, allowing you to continue enjoying them in different game modes.
The event also introduces some unique air vehicles that are playable but not permanently unlockable. Both factions get a chance to pilot bomber planes, and there are towering zeppelins you can take control of to rain down formidable payloads onto the battlefield.
But it’s not just these intriguing machines from WW1 that are worth noting—something entirely new takes the stage. War Thunder is debuting infantry for the very first time with this event. You’ll see AI-controlled soldiers rushing out of the trenches, charging towards enemy lines, and even targeting military vehicles with grenades. These soldiers aren’t just for visual effect; they present a real threat in battle.
Gaijin, the developer, mentions that a closed beta test focusing on infantry units is imminent. Meanwhile, The Great War event acts as a preview, showcasing how these units will deepen the strategic layers of combat in War Thunder.
For a long time, the addition of infantry has been a much-discussed topic among War Thunder enthusiasts. While the arrival of these units is welcomed, it’s quite audacious to pair their debut with a WW1-themed April Fool’s special. If it turns out that these infantry units are solely included for this event and nowhere else, Gaijin might have some explaining to do to its dedicated fanbase, including yours truly!
The Great War event is currently active and will continue until Monday, April 7. If the World War 1 era excites you—perhaps you’re a fellow fan of games like Battlefield 1—you’ll be pleased to know that War Thunder is readily accessible for free on Steam.
