Rumor has it that Ubisoft is in the works on a new game called ‘Alterra’, which is said to be a voxel-based social simulation game similar to Animal Crossing. If you’re a fan of games like Stardew Valley, Coral Island, and Castaway Paradise, you might want to keep an eye on this one. Xbox already hosts several games akin to Animal Crossing, so Ubisoft is certainly entering a competitive space.
Word on the street from Insider Gaming suggests that Alterra combines elements from Animal Crossing and Minecraft. In this game, you’ll have an island home populated by quirky NPCs known as Matterlings, reminiscent of Funko Pop figures. The game reportedly features building mechanics inspired by Minecraft, allowing players to craft their dream island homes.
Beyond your own island, Alterra is said to take players on adventures to different worlds, each featuring unique biomes. These worlds are not just aesthetically varied; they come with their own Matterlings, themed materials, and even enemies, blending fictional creatures with real-world animal inspirations, all centered around each biome.
The scoop also mentions that Ubisoft is planning to introduce new Matterlings over time, offering various species with unique outfits and traits. There’s also talk of player interaction, but the details on multiplayer modes are still under wraps. Could this mean exploring friends’ islands and worlds together?
Interestingly, Alterra reportedly began life as a different voxel-based project before it was shelved, and it’s been under development at Ubisoft Montreal for about a year and a half. It’s believed that Patrick Redding, who was the creative director on Gotham Knights, carries the same role here, alongside Fabien Lhéraud, a seasoned producer with 24 years at Ubisoft.
In other news from Ubisoft, new insights have surfaced about the stealth elements in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game, Shadows. Now, about Alterra—are you intrigued by the idea of a social sim from Ubisoft? We’d love to hear what you think, so drop your thoughts in the comments below!
