A developer from the team behind The Witcher 4 recently shed some light on the new fighting style that players will experience as Ciri takes over as the protagonist, stepping into the shoes most recently worn by Geralt. This isn’t just a shift in character on the surface; it brings a whole new dynamic to the gameplay itself.
The world got its first glimpse of The Witcher 4 during The Game Awards 2024, where a cinematic trailer unveiled Ciri’s starring role. While Geralt fans will still see him in the game, he’ll play a more minor part, allowing Ciri the space to truly shine. This shift opens up exciting possibilities for CD Projekt Red to innovate with fresh gameplay mechanics tailored to Ciri’s abilities.
Speaking on CD Projekt Red’s AnsweRED Podcast, senior communications manager Pawel Burza discussed a key sequence from the reveal trailer where Ciri executes an attack with a smooth somersault. “You don’t see Geralt doing these things,” he noted. “Geralt is nimble, but he feels like a block. Ciri, by contrast, is fluid—almost like liquid.” Those who played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt might recall several sequences where they could control Ciri, hinting at her unique agility. With The Witcher 4, this aspect will be fully integrated from the ground up.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba elaborated on Ciri’s combat style, saying, “She moves like she was raised by wolves in Kaer Morhen, and that’s reflected in her personality and posture.” Burza added, “Her body type is much different from Geralt’s—not as blocky, but nimble and smaller—which she uses to her advantage.” This thoughtfulness in character design means players can look forward to a Witcher game that feels fresh and distinctive, a welcome change after years of anticipation.
While gamers will need to be patient for a first look at The Witcher 4’s gameplay, bits of news from CD Projekt Red are gradually emerging. One such tidbit is the confirmation that Gwent, the beloved in-game card game, will return to The Witcher 4, ensuring that one of the series’ favorite side activities will remain a part of the experience.
