Let’s hope nothing changes these plans again.
Recently, the hefty tariffs that have been causing delays with Switch 2 preorders in the United States and Canada are getting a temporary reduction.
An announcement made on an official social media account today revealed a significant shift. The previous tariffs of 46% on imports from Vietnam (the country Nintendo turned to for hardware production in the late 2010s) and approximately 25% tariffs on imports from Japan (where Switch game cards are produced) have been scaled back to 10%, but only for the next 90 days. This lower rate will cover the initial launch period of the Switch 2. However, any additional shipments coming into the U.S. after the launch might face the original higher tariffs unless negotiations manage to bring lasting changes.
The statement also highlighted a new development regarding China, which has faced a massive 125% import tariff as a countermeasure against China’s steep 104% tariffs on U.S. goods entering their market. Meanwhile, Mexico, which had previously been spared from the tariff hikes and is responsible for producing Switch game card cases for North America, might also have to deal with a uniform 10% tariff.
