Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s New Trailer Drops a Surprise Pokemon Reference, Sparking Crossover Speculations

Today, Paramount and Sega surprised fans by dropping a fresh trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, featuring an unexpected nod to the beloved Pokémon franchise.

Ever since the first teaser for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 debuted a couple of months back, anticipation has been building as the film’s release is just weeks away. If you’ve been eagerly awaiting more sneak peeks, you’re in luck! Earlier today, Paramount unveiled the second official trailer for this upcoming adventure, and it surprisingly includes a kid questioning if Tails is Detective Pikachu. First, yes, they went there. Second, it totally threw me for a loop—in the best way possible! And third, I can’t help but imagine what such a crossover would entail.

Could we be seeing Sonic characters going head-to-head with Pokémon? I doubt Sonic would chase after Shaymin just because they’re both hedgehogs. He’d probably be more drawn to Jolteon—one of the fastest Pokémon out there—which aligns perfectly with Sonic’s cool, speedy persona. Or perhaps they’ll show us what Knuckles might look like as a Pokémon. The possibilities are endless! But let’s not forget, one of the trailer’s highlights is a glimpse of the Chao-themed restaurant where Team Sonic gathers, arguably the most delightful detail. There’s also a heart-wrenching moment featuring a match cut of Shadow and Maria, evoking nostalgia and maybe a few tears for those of us emotionally invested in Sonic’s storyline.

Beyond these trailers, there’s plenty more excitement on the horizon. Director Jeff Fowler has hinted at more surprises in the film, possibly introducing characters meant for future sequels (my bet is on Big the Cat making an appearance).

Get ready, because Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20. It’s right around the corner!
