This holiday season, the PSVR 2 delivered some surprising sales figures on Amazon US, far exceeding expectations by selling nearly five times more units compared to last year.
The driving force behind this jump in sales was undoubtedly the hefty 42% discount on the Horizon bundle, slashing its US price from $550 down to an enticing $350. Black Friday and the holiday discounts worked their magic, pushing the PSVR 2’s sales to new heights in 2024, achieving almost five times the peak sales volume on Amazon US compared to the previous year.
Interestingly, while the headset didn’t receive significant price cuts during the 2023 holiday season, the generous discount this time around really moved the needle. It’s easy to assume that cutting a product’s price by 50% might result in a 50% sales increase. However, PSVR 2 defied this straightforward expectation, proving that sales can soar well beyond basic projections when the conditions are just right.
Sony, in fact, initiated this enticing deal before Black Friday and kept it rolling into the new year. The prolonged sale period hints at a strategic move to clear out existing stock, possibly in anticipation of a new SKU. This could mean an incoming new bundle or a cost-effective redesign. While there’s some speculation that Sony might be losing confidence in the VR headset and considering a sell-off before discontinuing it, we believe it’s more likely that Sony plans to maintain support for the PSVR 2, at least until their next console upgrade, even if it doesn’t become a major focus in the meantime.
