There’s a buzz building around The Alters, the next big thing from 11 Bit Studios. This game is a bold step away from their usual style seen in hits like Frostpunk and This War of Mine. The Alters promises to breathe new life into some of the well-trodden paths of survival games. However, fans will need to wait a little longer, as the release has been pushed back to 2025.
If you’re a survival game enthusiast, The Alters will feel somewhat familiar—but with a twist. Crafting, resource management, and base-building are the core mechanics, but what sets this space adventure apart is its unique storyline. You step into the shoes of Jan Dolski, the only survivor of a crash on an alien planet. To get your ship back up and running, you’ll need to clone yourself.
These clones, or ‘Alters’, are created using a mysterious substance found on the planet. Each represents a different pivotal moment in Jan’s life. It’s an intriguing blend of ideas and was initially set to launch in the first quarter of this year. But the latest word from 11 Bit Studios confirms that’s not happening as planned.
In an endearing message to Jan from his “employer,” Ally Corp, the studio announced that the release has been delayed to further polish the game. Given the game’s ambitious concept and the fresh direction for the studio, it’s no surprise they’ve encountered unexpected challenges along the way.
Beyond survival mechanics, you’ll need to juggle diplomacy as well. Each of Jan’s clones has its own unique take on life, shaped by different personal choices—be it career changes for love or standing up to abuse. These differing viewpoints could easily lead to friction as they navigate their roles on the team.
Fans can now look forward to a new 2025 release date. But if you can’t wait that long, you’re in luck—a demo is currently available on Steam.
