PlayStation’s head honcho, Hideaki Nishino, recently emphasized how the PS Portal sales have been a resounding triumph for the company. He mentioned that this success is just the beginning as Sony explores innovative ways to deliver PlayStation games to players. During a chat with the BBC, Nishino hinted that the new addition of direct cloud streaming on the PS Portal is merely the starting point.
In light of the PS Portal’s impressive performance, there’s been buzz about Sony’s interest in developing a brand-new handheld device. The BBC tried to dig deeper with Nishino and co-CEO Hermen Hulst, but the duo was understandably tight-lipped. Yet, Nishino did share some insights, mentioning the shifting landscape of gaming habits, which in part fueled the release and popularity of the PS Portal.
“We’ve just rolled out a beta program for Cloud streaming directly to the handheld,” explained Nishino. “It’s all about exploring diverse avenues for gamers to enjoy their experiences.”
Rumors suggest that after taking a break from portable gaming, Sony has been experimenting with a new handheld device, with prototypes potentially already circulating. The PS Portal’s success seems to have spurred these developments further. Considering Microsoft’s transparent ambitions for an Xbox handheld, it’s likely Sony isn’t interested in falling behind, especially as the gaming world prepares for the PS6 era.
