You can breathe easier now, folks, because CD Projekt Red has officially kicked off production for the next Witcher game. While we shouldn’t hold our breaths given it’s likely several years from release, there’s finally a meaningful update for all you Witcher enthusiasts out there: the director heading up the sequel has confirmed that work is underway on Project Polaris, the codename for the next installment in this beloved RPG series. “I’m thrilled to announce that Project Polaris has entered the full-scale production phase!” announced Sebastian Kalemba on Twitter. “With new challenges just around the corner, it’s the talented and hard-working people who make me believe we can together make the upcoming Witcher Saga a remarkable experience. No stopping now! Stay tuned for what’s on the other side of the coin!”
Now if you look above, you’ll see Kalemba’s tweet, accompanied by a picture of coins spread out on a stone floor. A bit symbolic, perhaps? Sure. But even with production just beginning, it’s clear we’ve got a long wait ahead before we can dive back into the Witcher universe. As for exactly how long we’ll be waiting—your guess is as good as mine! Hopefully, we won’t be waiting another half-decade like we did with Cyberpunk 2077.
One tidbit to keep in mind is that this new project might not exactly be The Witcher 4. It’s set to be ten years next year since The Witcher 3 came out, and given how development times have increased, games are often crafted to welcome newcomers even when they’re part of an ongoing series. Case in point: Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom hardly leans into its predecessor, Breath of the Wild.
Interestingly, Geralt’s voice actor himself has hinted that the series’ iconic protagonist won’t be leading this new chapter. The initial reveal of the sequel even pointed out that it’s ushering in a fresh saga, so we can expect some new beginnings. Rest assured, CD Projekt Red will reveal more when the time is right, so hang tight—it’s bound to be an exciting journey ahead!
