Nintendo just revealed that U.S. pre-orders for the Switch 2 will kick off on April 24, keeping the price tags steady at $449.99 for the basic unit and $499.99 for the bundle that includes Mario Kart World.
Initially, pre-orders were delayed shortly after the console’s debut announcement. This pause was made to evaluate potential impacts related to tariffs and changing market dynamics.
However, some accessory prices are set for a hike. For instance, the upgraded Joy-Con 2 controllers are moving from $89.99 to $94.99, and the Pro Controller will see an increase from $79.99 to $84.99. Alongside these, the price tags for the Switch 2 camera, dock set, wheel set, and charging grips are all rising too.
Nintendo mentioned in their announcement that further price adjustments could happen down the road, depending on how market conditions evolve.
The planned launch for the system remains June 5. While pre-orders were originally slated for April 9, the timeline shifted when the system’s reveal coincided with President Donald Trump’s announcement of comprehensive tariffs. On that same April 9, Trump announced a 90-day halt on many tariffs, though Chinese goods were an exception, carrying increased tariffs.
On the brighter side, the pricing for new Nintendo game titles, like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Banaza (arriving July 17), isn’t changing. They’ve been listed at $79.99 and $69.99, respectively.
The Switch 2 itself boasts several enhancements over its predecessor. Gamers can expect a larger display with HDR support, along with an additional USB Type-C port. Plus, it’s powered by a beefier Nvidia graphics chip.
Pricewise, at $449.99, the new Switch 2 is quite a bump up from what the original Switch cost at launch, which was $299.99. This increase has sparked calls from fans urging Nintendo to “drop the price” in their streams.
Nintendo wrapped their announcement with an apology for the delay and expressed their hope that this move helps alleviate any uncertainty their customers might feel.
