Path of Exile 2 is set to go live later today, and if the buzz around its early-access sales is anything to go by, it’s going to be a massive hit. The excitement is so high that Jonathan Rogers, the game’s director, felt the need to send out a heads-up to all the eager fans: prepare for potential login queues once those servers light up.
In a candid video, Rogers delved into the realities of accommodating the swelling number of players eager to jump in as soon as the game launches. As the rush to get online intensifies, it’s become clear that their current infrastructure might buckle under the pressure of a million—or more—players.
According to a tweet from Path of Exile’s official account, they’ve already surpassed one million Early Access redemptions. Rogers expressed that the level of support has been staggering and far beyond their initial forecasts. However, such popularity also means they might hit some snags, particularly with player queues over the launch weekend.
“This is fantastic news,” Rogers cheerfully admits, “but it also means we’ll likely have some queues when the game goes live this weekend. Prior to this, when we were planning our server capacity, we truly didn’t foresee having a million people lining up simultaneously. We’ve extended our cloud capacity significantly, and new servers are set to come online shortly, but there are still some worries about the back-end infrastructure.”
Rogers continued, highlighting the uncertainties they face: “Frankly, we’re in the dark about how our systems will hold up beyond one million users. We’re pushing our resources to the max, adding more data shards, and scaling everything we can, but we’re navigating uncharted territory here. We never anticipated this scale during early access.”
Wrapping up his message, Rogers expressed his gratitude: “I just wanted to say thank you. Your belief in this project is incredible. If we hit any bumps with the servers at launch, just know we’re on it, working hard to iron things out. Thank you all so much.”
While waiting in a login queue is a routine hiccup in the world of online gaming, it’s a testament to how PoE2 is smashing expectations set by Grinding Gear Games. The anticipation is electric, especially for what seems like a stellar sequel to an already beloved ARPG.
