The creative minds at Another Axiom, the team behind the much-loved Gorilla Tag, have announced that their latest venture, Orion Drift, is about to get a fresh update. Since its early access debut last month, players have been exploring the vast space station, and now they have something new to look forward to: a mini-game known as ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB).
CTB is reminiscent of the classic capture the flag game, with an exciting twist. Your team’s objective is to transport a rod-shaped beacon back to your base. Orion Drift adds its unique flair by allowing limitless player numbers and setting no time constraints, opening the door for gamers to join in the fun whenever they want.
There’s more to this update than CTB, though exactly what remains a bit of a mystery. The developers have hinted at “a ton more” content set to launch, but details are under wraps until tomorrow’s big reveal at 10 AM PT.
Orion Drift made its entry into the scene on Quest as a free early access title in late February, borrowing the distinctive locomotion mechanics of Gorilla Tag. This means players can traverse the extensive space station by physically swinging their arms, moving them forward in a dynamic way.
Beyond the CTB addition, Orion Drift already boasts a variety of activities. Chief among them is ‘Drift Ball’, a game that draws inspiration from the now-closed Echo VR. It mirrors a low-gravity handball game, providing players with an engaging challenge. The space station is rich with other mini-games too. There are districts set up with climbing courses reminiscent of Gorilla Tag, practice arenas for perfecting Drift Ball skills, golf and basketball mini-games, and comfortable lounges for watching fierce matches unfold in various arenas.
Currently, Orion Drift can handle up to 75 players per server, but Another Axiom has plans to increase that number significantly to 200 in the future. Adding more mini-games is a step towards this ambitious plan, though the game is still in its early stages.
Despite following a similar model to the hugely successful Gorilla Tag, Orion Drift hasn’t yet matched the viral fame of its predecessor. So far, it has garnered around 3,300 user reviews and hasn’t climbed into the top 50 best-selling Quest games. Standing at the top are still heavyweights like Animal Company, Yeeps, and Gorilla Tag itself.
As Orion Drift continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how it captures the imagination of players and grows in the competitive landscape of VR gaming.
