If you’ve ever fantasized about diving into No Man’s Sky and living out your dream of being a dinosaur enthusiast who somehow ended up dating Jennifer Aniston, today might just be your lucky day. Hello Games has just rolled out their latest update, Relics, which invites you to delve into the intriguing world of space archaeology and collect gigantic alien fossils.
This update follows the substantial Worlds expansion released in January, which introduced “billions of new stars and planets,” complete with massive gas giants and quirky flying squid creatures that might just slap you for overfishing.
As detailed in a blog post and the accompanying video, the highlight of the Relics update is space paleontology. This is right up the alley of Ross Geller from Friends, during those rare moments he isn’t having a meltdown over a sandwich or donning the guise of a holiday armadillo.
Now, you can channel your inner David Schwimmer as you traverse the galaxy, unearthing “hundreds of unique bones” and piecing them together in your museum to figure out their original forms. Can you rearrange bones to suggest that No Man’s Sky’s various alien species evolved from technologically advanced beings with less-than-pleasant oral hygiene, like the fictional Fartongueians? Who knows, it could be worth a try.
However, tread carefully. The update also introduces Reanimated Guardians—massive stone lifeforms that slumber by fossil beds, poised to defend these ancient sites from intrepid explorers. These guardians resemble cool stone robots rather than creatures with misplaced facial features, so there goes that hypothesis. Additionally, you’ll encounter Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies, the latter remaining as watchful monuments of bygone alien civilizations.
Expect to encounter living remnants, such as Titanic Boneworms and “skeletal fauna,” as you explore bone-laden planets and certain purple star systems. You can visit Fossil Collectors on Space Stations to sell your crafted fossil exhibits or swap bones for a diverse selection of fossils. Plus, there’s the added thrill of cooking with bones.
Sign up for the Galactic Paleontology Society and embark on the new expedition Relics introduces. You’ll be rewarded with a jetpack made of sentient rock, the ability to transform your character into a sentient rock, and a skeletal creature to keep you company.
