Nintendo is planning to shut down network services for the Nintendo Switch in China, including the eShop, starting in 2026.
This gradual shutdown will kick off on March 31, 2026, when players will no longer be able to purchase games or other software. Then, on May 15, downloading titles, redeeming codes, acquiring DLC, and accessing other network services will no longer be possible.
Switch owners in China, along with those using a WeChat account linked to their console, have a little silver lining during this transition. From November 27, 2024, to March 31, 2026, they can download up to four games for free. The selection features popular titles like Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch, and classics like Kirby Star Allies and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Other options include Mario Tennis Aces, New Pokemon Snap, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu / Eevee, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party, and Yoshi’s Crafted World.
It’s important to note that this announcement specifically pertains to China. Nintendo, in partnership with Tencent, handles things differently due to the unique market environment. The eShop in China offers a considerably smaller selection of games compared to other global versions.
