Glover has returned, now available on Nintendo Switch thanks to the combined efforts of Interactive Studios, Piko Interactive, and QUByte Interactive. Let’s dive into what Glover offers in this modern revisit!
Initially brought to life by Interactive Studios—the minds behind the legendary Dizzy series—Glover was first launched in 1998. The company, later known as Blitz Games, was founded by the Oliver Twins back in 1990. Players familiar with their previous work will find Glover a nostalgic return to their innovative style. This 3D puzzle platformer challenges you to navigate levels as Glover, skillfully guiding your ball from one point to the next.
Originally released on the Nintendo 64 through Hasbro Interactive, and eventually making its way to the PlayStation via Atari Interactive, Glover is now a part of the QUByte Classic series. It’s a nostalgic trip back to the vibrant Crystal Kingdom—but with the handheld joys of the Nintendo Switch.
The plot unfolds with the wizard accidentally causing an explosion that scatters the Kingdom’s precious crystals, along with Glover himself. Utilizing a quick spell, Glover transforms the crystals into bouncy rubber balls, preventing a disastrous crash. Your quest is to recover these lost crystals from six distinct levels: Atlantis, Carnival, Pirates, Prehistoric, Fortress of Fear, and Out of This World. Completionists will aim to gather all collectible Garibs and tackle bonus levels along the way.
Controls are intuitive: the left stick maneuvers Glover, while the right adjusts the camera. Use the X button to zoom, the A button for jumping and double jumping, and the B button to dribble the ball. For advanced moves, press ZR to ground pound and L to perch atop the ball. You can throw the ball with a held B press or smack it across gaps with A. Transform the ball’s form with the R button—though we won’t spoil what surprises await!
Glover may be labeled "too old-school," but it offers a distinctive charm that appeals to both fans of retro games and newcomers alike. Alongside its revitalized presence on the Switch for $19.99, players can enjoy additional features like an art gallery showcasing boss designs, characters, concepts, and various enemies.
The re-release of Glover provides an opportunity to indulge in this classic platformer, experiencing both nostalgia and fresh charm. Happy gaming as you explore the magical quirks and puzzles that made Glover an icon of its time!
