We all know Sony’s attempts at creating a Spider-Man-less universe have mostly missed the mark, but the director of “Kraven the Hunter” is hopeful that you’ll give his movie a fair shot.
Think about it: Venom, Morbius, Madame Web. They all share three things—they’re connected to Spider-Man, they’re produced by Sony, and frankly, they haven’t been up to snuff. Now, I personally think Venom is delightfully entertaining, but let’s be honest, not everyone agrees. J.C. Chandor, the director behind the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter,” is well aware of this general sentiment. Once again, we’re getting another movie centered around a Spider-Man villain, yet Spidey himself is nowhere in sight. In a chat with ComicBook, Chandor addressed the less-than-stellar reception of previous films and asked fans to still give his a chance.
“I’m not going to dive too deep into details, but here’s my take: my main aim as a filmmaker, especially in the past couple of years where you guys are deeply involved in this universe… let’s be real, a lot of fans were unhappy with some choices and results in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe,” Chandor acknowledged.
“But look, other movies turned out to be massive hits too. So yeah, it’s been a mixed bag. I just want people to come out, support our film, and try to forget about the disappointments from before. Give our film a shot.” Now, I’d say he’s stretching things just a little. Out of the five live-action Sony Spider-Verse films, true, three did well, but that’s mostly thanks to the Venom films, a character who’s got far more recognition and appeal than Morbius or Madame Web. So calling it a mixed success might not be the full story.
Chandor also noted that he’s confident fans will “see that we’ve done everything possible to deliver a really enjoyable tale. By the time the movie ends, you’ll notice there’s potential for exciting developments. My mission was to focus solely on our story, make it the best it can be, and then explore all the fun possibilities that could follow.”
What could those fun possibilities be? It’s anyone’s bet, but clearly, they hinge on the film’s success. We’ll just have to watch and find out.
Mark your calendars because “Kraven the Hunter” is set to hit theaters in just a few weeks, on December 13.
