nDreams, the creative team behind the free-to-play arena shooter “FRENZIES,” has announced that the game will be leaving early access later this year. However, contrary to earlier plans, the game won’t be coming to the PSVR 2 platform.
In an official statement, nDreams shared that while “FRENZIES” won’t launch on PSVR 2, they have some exciting plans lined up for PSVR 2 enthusiasts:
“We’re thrilled to share that once FRENZIES exits Early Access later this year, it will continue to be free-to-play! The feedback from players on Meta Quest during Early Access has been overwhelmingly positive, with many embracing the game’s unique chaos. We are committed to expanding on this success as we transition out of Early Access.
To ensure we deliver the best version of FRENZIES possible, we’ve chosen to focus our resources on its Meta Quest release. Though this means the game won’t be launching on PSVR 2, we have other exciting opportunities for PSVR 2 players that we can’t wait to unveil!
Stay tuned, as we have more FRENZIES updates and developments coming in the weeks ahead with our Early Access roadmap.”
“FRENZIES” made its debut in early access for Quest 2 and newer devices back in October 2024, offering a fast-paced arena shooter experience with a variety of standard weaponry and game modes all wrapped in a robust, VR-focused gameplay.
For those hoping to experience “FRENZIES” on PSVR 2 at launch, this news might be a letdown. However, the developer’s decision is understandable when viewed from their perspective.
In recent months, the Quest platform has seen an increase in younger demographics, spurred partly by the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S. This has contributed to a rise in free-to-play content on the platform.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, remarked in February, “We foresee free-to-play becoming a widely viable option for developers, who have mostly depended on premium apps so far. However, free-to-play is not expected to eliminate premium apps entirely—both will likely thrive alongside each other.”
The challenging economic landscape also plays a significant role. By focusing on its largest player base, nDreams is likely optimizing its return, especially after recently consolidating its nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new internal studio called ‘Compass’ following some layoffs.
Despite these changes, nDreams remains a key player in XR game development, having crafted and launched a myriad of high-quality VR titles such as “Vendetta Forever,” “Power Wash Simulator VR,” “Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord,” “Synapse,” “Fracked,” “Little Cities,” and “Phantom: Cover Ops,” just to name a few.
