Yellow Brick Studios is really shaking things up in their latest game with more than just a revamped magic system. The world is divided into distinct zones, each like its own little open-world adventure. You’ll find blueprints for new gear, dynamic weather changes, and variations depending on whether it’s day or night when you enter. Each area is bursting with major goals, minor objectives, and hidden secrets ready for you to discover. In true homage to recent Zelda titles, our hero Bryn can scale almost any surface, so don’t just look ahead—look up, too.
At the heart of these zones are the formidable Great Foes. Imagine going toe-to-toe with flying drakes or massive automata wandering this vast landscape. Not only do they represent your biggest combat trials, but conquering them is crucial for unlocking and enhancing your spells. Each foe is tied to a specific magical ability, so you’ll need to take down each Great Foe multiple times to reach maximum spell potential.
What makes the Great Foes stand out is that they aren’t just hefty hitpoints to whittle down—they’re strategic puzzles to solve. Take one automaton boss: you’ll have to scramble across its enormous frame, detach armor pieces, and strike key parts. And that drake swooping above? It needs more than just a good aim; you’ll have to ice up its wings to bring it grounded, at least temporarily, before it breathes fire again.
Once you’ve bested a Great Foe, you gain access to a codex entry that not only dives into its backstory but also drops hints on beating it without simply draining its health bar. This means you can discover ways to extract the magic sustaining it—essentially a one-hit victory move—adding a new puzzling layer. Like with the drake: the secret lies in capturing its magic mid-flight after disarming its horns. It might fling you off while it’s still fully agile, so your best bet is to render it partially airborne—grounding with just one damaged wing—to snatch up that magical bounty.
