Recently, Funcom dropped some enticing updates about Dune Awakening, providing insights into its plans after the launch, along with PC specifications through their Steam page.
In a brief video led by Joel Byros, the chief creative officer, Funcom laid out the roadmap for Dune Awakening’s journey post-launch. Scheduled for a release on May 20, the exciting news is that the game will skip the typical MMO subscription model. Instead, it will thrive on a combination of optional paid DLC packs and complementary updates that will be rolled out regularly.
These free updates promise a slew of enhancements including quality of life improvements, added features, and fresh storylines to keep the game lively and engaging. While there’s no detailed breakdown of the DLC content yet, we know they’ll be available either individually or bundled in a season pass, offering multiple additions in one go.
Byros also shared an amusing note about early access. Some players might snag early entry on May 15, getting a jumpstart in the universe of Dune Awakening. Although it might seem like a perk for some, Byros highlighted that it aids the team in managing server loads more effectively, ensuring a smoothly launched MMO experience. After all, a rocky start is every developer’s nightmare.

How do you feel about this business model? Personally, I’m relieved. With so many subscriptions weighing me down these days, a game I can purchase outright and revisit whenever I fancy is a breath of fresh air. It’s what keeps me heading back to Guild Wars 2 now and then, so no complaints on my part. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for some extra details during a gameplay stream slated for March 24 as teased at the end of the Steam post.
