### Merciless As The Sea
Portia Maye, before turning into The Houndmaster, was once on the path to a typical life. From a young age, she was surrounded by her father’s love and the tantalizing promise of adventures at sea. Sadly, her life took a grim turn when the ruthless pirate Mad Molak attacked her father’s ship, the Nightsdream, leaving a trail of death in his wake.
Portia survived as a celestial navigator, but her soul was drawn into darkness, driven by an insatiable thirst for vengeance. Her path forever changed when she deliberately steered her ship, along with her tormentors, into the ominous Dragon’s Tooth, claiming the lives of all but herself. In what seemed like a twist of fate, she emerged as the sole survivor, eventually finding companionship in her loyal pup, Snug.
Consider this: Portia was once the epitome of a Survivor, enduring the bloodshed aboard the Nightsdream and surviving years stranded on the Dragon’s Tooth. But her relentless craving for revenge twisted her mind, stoking a fiery desire for blood that grew with time.
Unbeknownst to her, the Dragon’s Tooth was a Bleed, a mystical intersection where realms merge. Think of Bleeds like a painter’s palette where colors mix from two worlds into one.
“The thing about entering a Bleed,” says Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind, “is if it doesn’t destroy you, it drives you insane.”
Eventually, Portia’s madness mirrored her proficiency in brutality, cementing her as a Killer more ruthless than Molak. By the time she exacted her revenge, her place in The Entity’s realm was secured.
Her humanity’s last trace was tied to Snug, her only companion and fierce guardian—evident in The Houndmaster’s abilities, which leverage Snug’s skill to hunt down Survivors.
### For The Black Talon
Taurie Cain grew up within the Black Talon division of the ominous Black Vale, committed to unraveling The Entity’s mysteries. Her parents stumbled into a Bleed while pursuing their research, pulling Taurie into a tragic spiral when she followed them inside.
From that point, Taurie devoted herself to the dark cause, swiftly ascending the Black Talon’s ranks. Unlike some Survivors, like Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto, Taurie actively sought out darkness, believing The Entity held the key to transcendence.
“Taurie genuinely thinks her actions benefit humanity,” Thind explains. “Yet, as she climbed the ranks, her path darkened immensely, reaching an irreversible point.”
Facing a critical juncture, Taurie was tasked with the ritualistic execution of Jordan Rois, Haddie Kaur’s stepbrother and a Black Talon adversary. She hesitated with her knife mid-strike—a pivotal choice just before her descent into The Fog.
In The Fog, Taurie’s beliefs were tarnished by the harsh reality of endless agony. While another might crumble, Taurie remained steadfast, convinced her destiny remained unfulfilled.
“Her commitment to the Vale might actually be an asset in The Fog,” Thind adds. “Taurie believes everything aligns with a greater plan, striving to become a recognized disciple—a Killer.”
It prompts us to wonder why The Entity initially brought Taurie into its Realm as a Survivor.
“For some reason, The Entity thrives on human emotion,” Thind notes. “Perhaps Taurie’s presence serves a purpose, fostering tension among Survivors. Taurie’s frustration over being trapped with non-believers stirs resentment—exactly what The Entity would relish.”
Despite these challenges, Taurie resolves to adapt and excel in her new environment. Her skills emphasize distancing from teammates, provoking the Killer, and turning her pain into an advantage.
Intriguingly, while both Portia and Taurie experienced Bleeds, Taurie emerged mostly unscathed. Under alternate circumstances, their fates within The Entity’s Realm could have been swapped. Yet, in this realm, once a path is chosen, there’s no turning back—especially when the destination is enshrouded in Fog…
