Bungie has finally given us a glimpse into its eagerly anticipated extraction shooter, Marathon. Today marked the reveal of the first detailed look at the gameplay, and it’s confirmed that this exciting title is set to launch on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S platforms on September 23rd, 2025.
In Marathon, you step into the role of a Runner, which are essentially cybernetic mercenaries boasting unique abilities. Team up with a couple of friends to form a squad of up to three, as you tackle the dual challenge of fighting against hostile AI security forces and rival Runner teams. As you navigate through the game, you’ll gather weapons, implants, and equipment. The catch? Only if you make it out alive do you get to keep the spoils for future missions.
Imagining teaming up isn’t your style, there’s an intriguing twist—dare to go it alone. Solo players can dive into the fray independently, facing off against entire teams and grabbing their loot single-handedly, adding an extra layer of challenge for those who thrive off high stakes.

Even though September 2025 may seem a long way off, there’s a chance for eager fans to get a sneak peek this month. A Closed Alpha is scheduled to kick off on April 23rd, and if you’re keen to participate, your first stop should be the official Marathon Discord server to sign up.
