Over the weekend, Bungie unveiled the gameplay for Marathon, their latest entry into the world of sci-fi gaming. Known for its exceptional first-person shooter mechanics, Bungie is stepping into the extraction shooter genre with a launch date set for September 23. The game offers a straightforward yet captivating allure: equip your Runner with valuable gear, face off against competitors to seize more loot, and put everything on the line to successfully extricate with your haul.
In the wake of this exciting reveal, I had the chance to chat with Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler. Our conversation delved into Bungie’s approach to this new genre, how they’re harnessing the power of the PlayStation 5, the game’s distinctive art style, and much more.
In the lively aftermath of the gameplay reveal, I asked Joe Ziegler how the team was feeling after such a momentous event. “It’s an exhilarating time. I’ve been using the term ‘nerve-cited’ a lot,” Joe shared. “This project has been a labor of love for several years, and it’s a blend of passion and the drive to deliver something incredible. Seeing it in players’ hands for the first time brings a mix of excitement and nerves. We’ve put so much thought into every decision, and we’re eager to hear what the players think.”
I asked Joe if there were any pivotal moments during Marathon’s development that made the team realize they were onto something special. “There were so many unpredictable moments,” he explained. “The game takes you to a mysterious planet teeming with danger. Whether it’s turning a corner to find yourself face-to-face with the formidable UESC or navigating the landscape while dodging bullets from rival crews, these moments are intense and memorable. It’s those thrilling experiences where you barely escape—or turn the tide in your favor—that linger with you for a long time.”
Delving into the origins of the name “Marathon,” Joe illuminated its roots. “Back in the 1994 original, ‘Marathon’ was the moniker of the colony ship sent by the UESC to Tau Ceti. It was a unique ship constructed within an asteroid-like moon for a 500-year journey—a marathon indeed,” he recounted. “For this new chapter, we’re reviving the Marathon name to honor its legacy. We’re bringing in familiar IP elements and reimagining them for the present, ensuring fans of the past will recognize elements like the ship and Tau Ceti.”
Bungie’s hallmark is their flawless gunplay, and I was curious how they aimed to innovate with Marathon’s FPS experience. Joe elaborated, “It’s about the survival experience. We want players to confront resource management and adaptability. With familiar gameplay elements as a foundation, we’re layering intense survival mechanics. Health regeneration is limited, shifting reliance to consumables, which forces decisions about whether to engage in battle or reconsider your strategy based on available resources.”
For those apprehensive about the high-stakes nature of extraction shooters, Joe offered reassurance. “The game is challenging but deeply rewarding. It fosters survival skills you might not have encountered before, leading to a sense of mastery. We’ve also fine-tuned the game so it feels intuitive on controllers, making it accessible even if you’re used to PC setups. It’s designed for seamless gameplay so you can focus on honing those essential skills for memorable escapades.”
Addressing the topic of persistent progression, Joe highlighted the game’s structure. “We ensure players gain something from every match. Progress might involve leveling up your Runner and enhancing character stats through resources and currency. You can also access new options at the Black Market, where in-game currency can be used to purchase weapons, implants, and upgrades as per your unlocked items.”
Joe also noted how Bungie is exploiting the PlayStation 5’s capabilities for Marathon. “We’ve implemented haptic feedback on [DualSense wireless controllers], enhancing immersion during firefights. The Tempest 3D Audio engine is also supported for a captivating audio experience. Plus, with the PS5 and PS5 Pro, we’re leveraging advanced rendering technology and upscaling for spectacular visuals.”
Marathon’s striking art style is another highlight. “Our design draws heavily from graphic and modern product design, crafting an aesthetic that challenges perceptions. The juxtaposition of bold, printed graphics with tech-infused sci-fi elements against organic backgrounds creates a unique contrast and encapsulates the game’s themes of paranoia and discovery.”
Finally, Joe shared some parting thoughts for the PlayStation audience. “For those who relish survival challenges, enjoy testing their limits against others, and crave an adrenaline-fueled adventure with unpredictable outcomes, Marathon is perfect for you. We’ve ensured cross-platform harmony and eagerly anticipate welcoming PlayStation players to our community—players who will push the boundaries and redefine our game.”
Marathon is set to launch on September 23 for PS5, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S.
