If you’re familiar with the British Isles, Birmingham might not be the first place you’d consider for a video game setting. But what if you rewind to the 14th century and toss in some zombies? Suddenly, it’s a contender. That’s exactly what “God Save Birmingham” aims to achieve, and after checking out about eight minutes of new gameplay footage, it’s jumped straight to the top of my list of anticipated zombie games.
I generally lean towards zombie games that are all about co-op play with dynamic hordes and outrageous weapons—think Call of Duty Zombies or Dead Island 2. So, titles like Killing Floor 3 and the mysteriously quiet John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando have had my attention. But now, God Save Birmingham has stolen the spotlight.
This isn’t your typical co-op zombie shooter where you’re swinging electrified baseball bats or using portable jet turbines. I’ve seen glimpses before, but after watching IGN’s new extended trailer, it has a strong The Last of Us vibe with third-person stealth and solid takedown animations. While the narrative might not reach TLOU’s heights, it nails the zombie-battling experience.
Environmental interaction is a big thing here. You can move furniture to block doorways, use ladders as makeshift bridges, and stand on chairs to reach high ledges. Everything, including you and the zombies, features realistic physics, providing a fun and reactive sandbox.
The latest trailer highlights the depth of its survival mechanics. You’ll manage meters for hunger, thirst, fatigue, and panic. Restoring these requires real-time inventory management—no quick fixes here. Falling from heights causes leg injuries that slow you down, and you can disassemble objects for raw materials. There’s even a comprehensive cooking system.
I’m genuinely impressed, and the medieval setting adds a fresh twist to the zombie genre. Currently, God Save Birmingham doesn’t have a release date, but early access is in the works.
