Rumors are swirling that Ubisoft, the well-known French publisher, is crafting a new battle royale game aimed squarely at competing with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft’s project, internally known as Scout, appears to be drawing a lot of inspiration from the popular game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by EA. At one point, Scout’s art even served as a placeholder image for the project, hinting at striking similarities between the two. Reports suggest the characters might bear a resemblance to those in Apex Legends as well. It’s clear that this game has been under development for quite a while.
Ubisoft seems to be betting on capturing some of the player base from Apex Legends, especially in light of a reported downturn in its financial performance acknowledged by its publisher, Electronic Arts. A source close to the project remarked, “The strategy appears to be leveraging the dip in Apex’s player numbers by introducing a fresh contender in the hero Battle Royale space.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at breaking into the free-to-play battle royale genre. They previously launched Hyperscape back in 2020, but unfortunately, that title didn’t last long, shutting down a mere 18 months later. This effort also follows the recent decision to discontinue another free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, which will conclude at the end of 2024.
On a related note, fans of Apex Legends might be intrigued to know that a new iteration, Apex Legends 2.0, is anticipated to be released sometime post-April 2026.
