Pixelity, a game development studio from Korea, has exciting news for fans of the iconic ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. They’re in the process of crafting an XR game inspired by the beloved series, 1995’s Neon Genesis Evangelion.
In a recent blog post, Pixelity shared that they’ve officially teamed up with Japan’s Studio Khara, having secured a licensing agreement to bring this project to life. This ambitious game will come in three parts, each drawing from the anime’s entire 26-episode storyline. The first part is already in production, aiming for a 2026 debut.
For those who are die-hard Evangelion enthusiasts, you’ll know exactly why this is a big deal. The anime was pivotal in revitalizing the genre in Japan during the ’90s, and it left a lasting impact, shaping future anime series and captivating audiences worldwide.
The narrative unfolds in 2015, which, interestingly enough, was 20 years after the anime first aired. It centers around Shinji Ikari, a young pilot chosen to control the Evangelion—a giant humanoid weapon tasked with safeguarding humanity against the mysterious Angels that are wreaking havoc on Tokyo-3.
Though specific gaming platforms haven’t been confirmed yet, the studio promises “an immersive XR experience” where players can explore familiar locations from the series, follow its iconic timeline, complete various missions, and engage in thrilling battles.
Pixelity highlights that the game will include elements of cooperative play, allowing fans to interact with characters from Evangelion, which they believe will appeal strongly to longtime followers. They are committed to crafting a dynamic action-adventure experience that stands out in the genre.
Since its establishment in 2017, Pixelity has rolled out several VR titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). The studio is also busy developing two more VR games, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
Unlike previous VR adaptations of Evangelion, this will be the first official at-home game for the series. Back in 2017, the Bandai Namco-backed VR studio ‘Project i Can’ offered Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls—a four-player experience available for a limited time at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan.
