Valve, the gaming powerhouse, has now made the complete client and server code for Team Fortress 2 available in its Source engine SDK. In a recent blog update, Valve announced that this move enables developers to create entirely new game mods. Fans are now empowered to “change, extend or rewrite” the beloved online shooter.
However, there is a catch for game creators—they can’t make money from these creations. Valve stated, “The SDK is licensed for non-commercial use only. This means any mod crafted using the SDK must remain free, as should all its content. You can publish TF2 mods on the Steam Store, and once they’re published, they’ll show up as new games in the Steam game list.”
Valve acknowledged the significant investment players have in their TF2 inventories and paid tribute to the contributors on the Steam Workshop, who have crafted much of the game’s current items. The statement emphasized, “Most items in the game are thanks to the dedication of the TF2 community. We ask TF2 mod creators to honor this relationship and avoid making mods that aim to profit from the efforts of Workshop contributors. We hope that many mods will allow players to access their TF2 inventory whenever it fits the mod’s purpose.”
