AMD has put an end to the swirling rumors about the development of a 32 GB version of its Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU. If you’ve been keeping up with the buzz, you might recall hearing whispers on forums like Chiphell suggesting that a hefty 32 GB edition of this GPU was in the pipeline, allegedly slated for this year and categorized under the ‘Gaming’ series, not the PRO range.
However, all of this speculation can now be put to rest. Frank Azor from AMD took to X, responding directly to a post from Techpowerup, and clarified the situation once and for all:
“No, the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB capacity,” Azor confirmed on February 13, 2025.
As it stands, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is set to launch with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Realistically, the potential gaming benefits of bumping this up to 32 GB are negligible, especially when considering the original rumors hinted at AI applications being a primary focus for the expanded memory. But in terms of gaming, the specs just wouldn’t translate into significant performance gains.
AMD hasn’t yet ventured into offering a 32 GB gaming GPU, and there’s sound reasoning behind this. Packing an upper-mid-range GPU like the RX 9070 XT with such a capacity wouldn’t necessarily enhance performance in a meaningful way. As it stands, the RX 9070 XT, expected to be the flagship model in the RDNA 4 series based on the Navi 48 GPU, will likely top out at 16 GB VRAM.
Following close behind the RX 9070 XT are other models such as the RX 9070 and those based on the Navi 44 architecture. These will inevitably sport lower specs, impacting their performance in comparison. On February 28, AMD plans to officially unveil the RX 9000 series, and this will include full details on specifications, pricing, and performance directly from the horse’s mouth.
The rollout to retailers is slated for early March, right around when NVIDIA is also anticipated to release its GeForce RTX 5070 GPU. Previously, Azor has indicated that AMD’s 70-class GPUs are designed to go toe-to-toe with NVIDIA’s 70-class offerings. Watching the head-to-head between the RX 9070 XT, RX 9070, and NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 Ti promises to be rather intriguing for gaming and tech enthusiasts alike.
