Ancient Dungeon VR, the beloved rogue-lite adventure game, has now received a much-anticipated update for PSVR 2, introducing multiplayer co-op.
First released on Steam Early Access back in 2021, and later on the discontinued App Lab for Quest, Ancient Dungeon originally offered a single-player journey. Players could spend over 20 hours exploring labyrinthine dungeons while engaging in immersive, physics-driven battles against pixelated wizards, skeletons, and other enemies reminiscent of classic D&D fantasies.
Mid-2024 saw the game evolve with the addition of four-player co-op on Quest and SteamVR versions. However, PSVR 2 players were left waiting when the game launched on their platform in December 2023 without this feature.
That wait is finally over. Developer Eric Thullen has now released an exciting multiplayer update for PSVR 2. Gamers can team up, up to four at a time, to navigate the game’s ever-changing dungeons, complete with deadly traps and formidable foes, all in cooperative play mode.
In a Reddit Q&A session, Thullen mentioned that cross-play isn’t available between the game’s different platforms just yet. However, he assured fans that cross-play compatibility with Quest and PC VR is in the pipeline and will be rolled out in the future.
Ancient Dungeon has become a indie VR success story, gaining early momentum with a triumphant Kickstarter campaign in 2020. The game’s initial beta release received excellent feedback, amassing over 1,000 reviews with a stellar rating of 4.8 out of 5.
Fast forward to almost five years later, and Thullen’s team continues to enhance the game with regular updates. These updates have added a slew of new content, including weapons, cosmetic items, insight upgrades, and various dungeon elements like floors and relics, all as they work towards releasing the full 1.0 version, which is still on the horizon according to a recent Steam update.
For those interested, Ancient Dungeon VR is available on various platforms. You can pick it up on Steam for PC VR headsets, the Horizon Store for Quest, and the PlayStation Store for PSVR 2, all for the price of $20.
