Don’t set your hopes too high with the initial teaser for the Until Dawn movie—it mostly serves to explain how it distinguishes itself from the game.
Since its announcement last year, the Until Dawn movie has been shrouded in secrecy. However, last week, a few more details surfaced, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come. This version will introduce completely new characters and an original storyline. This direction might not be what some fans of the game expected since the filmmakers seem to be capturing the essence of Until Dawn rather than a direct game replica, despite Peter Stormare returning as Dr. Hill. Earlier today, Sony released something akin to a teaser, featuring some selected clips from the movie, focusing on what sets it apart from the game.
In the teaser, director David F. Sandberg mentions, “One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways. The movie has this mechanic where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they are in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it until dawn.” Clever, right? It ties back to the game’s title! While hardcore fans might long for a straightforward adaptation, you have to wonder how else you could translate the game’s branching paths and multiple endings to film.
If you’re still unsure, Sony assures us that a full trailer is “coming soon.” One would hope this becomes available swiftly, with the movie hitting theaters on April 25—just a jump, skip, and three months away. Fingers crossed we don’t find ourselves caught in a timeloop like the one depicted in Until Dawn!
