Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to captivate players, thanks to ongoing contributions from Larian Studios and an active modding community. The sheer size and complexity of the base game have been enough to pull in hardcore DnD enthusiasts, but it’s the continuous influx of new content that keeps the adventure alive.
Last year, fans of BG3 were already creating cool mods, even before the official mod support was unveiled in the summer. One standout creation during that time was ‘Trials of Tav’ by modder Hippo0o. This mod introduced an entire roguelike mode, allowing players to embark on endless adventures, battling wave after wave of adversaries.
With updates on the original mod slowing, other creative minds have stepped in to expand on Trails of Tav’s concept. Enter ‘Trials of Tav – Reloaded’ by the modder Celerev, who has taken this idea and enhanced it further, adding a fresh twist to the already intriguing premise.
Celerev’s update promises a slew of improvements including bug fixes, revamped monsters, improved scaling, and a host of new enemies drawn from the tabletop universe. Excited to know more about these new foes? Among them is a challenging “superboss,” which caps at level 27 and is crafted to test all your strategic skills in classic RPG style.
This “superboss” is the ultimate challenge in the new scaling system. Conquer it, and you can truly say you’ve mastered the run. Of course, you’ll only have to get past the notorious rats in the Elfsong Tavern’s basement first—a feat easier said than done!
Beyond the big bosses, Celerev has infused the game with over 60 additional foes from the base game, featuring unique adversaries like Nine-Fingers Keene and a rather menacing sheep. New custom bosses are also part of the mix, alongside various bug fixes. Mechanics-wise, the scaling rates have been adjusted to ensure that creatures with thematic, potent abilities can make their grand entrance without rendering the player’s chances of victory impossible. Plus, shops have been re-balanced to enhance gameplay fairness.
Celerev humbly acknowledges the groundbreaking work done by Hippo0o on the original mod. “The lua scripting and foundational work Hippo0o created is a testimony to his passion, effort, and skill,” Celerev says. “I simply hope that those who desire the tactical combat of BG3 to extend into higher levels will find joy in my additions.”
Of course, sticking with the original Trials of Tav is always an option if the new updates don’t quite align with your style. However, it’s exciting to witness how these modding ideas develop and evolve over time. If nothing else, it might serve as a fun diversion while you wait for the much-anticipated Patch 8 testing slated to begin this month.
