Although we’re eagerly waiting for James Gunn to drop the first trailer for his Superman film later this week, he’s given us a little something to hold us over: the movie’s main theme.
James Gunn is certainly under the microscope right now. As the co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s the one steering the ship of the new DC Universe (DCU). This could either turn into a monumental success or, if things don’t pan out, it might force DC to finally let go of its dream of a connected film universe. After all, even comic book fans know there’s only so many times you can hit the reboot button. Gunn took to Twitter to announce that the much-anticipated teaser for Superman will land on Thursday. This release will give us the first proper glimpse into the new DCU—at least on the big screen, since his animated series Creature Commandos is already up and running as part of this new venture.
Now, to get you through until the big teaser premiere, Gunn decided to release a snippet of the movie’s main theme. You can find it online alongside a brief clip—or perhaps more accurately, a sort of GIF—showing David Corenswet’s Superman taking to the skies. The theme itself has a charming, mellow, and nostalgic feel to it. And if you listen closely, you’ll catch nods to the iconic 1978 Superman film directed by Richard Donner, with its unforgettable score by none other than John Williams.
The composer behind this new theme is John Murphy. He’s no stranger to crafting memorable scores, with past work on films like 28 Days Later, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which also had Gunn at the helm. This marks the third collaboration between Gunn and Murphy, following their work on Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.
After Thursday’s teaser, we’re still in for a bit of a wait. The full Superman movie is slated for release on July 11 next year. So, hang in there—it’ll be worth the wait!
