Meta has just announced an exciting collaboration with Lightstorm Vision, James Cameron’s renowned 3D film studio. Together, they plan to roll out an impressive array of spatial content that spans numerous genres, from live events to full-length movies.
As part of this new partnership, Metas’s blog reveals plans to bring audiences live sports, concerts, feature films, and TV series all showcasing "big-name intellectual properties." What’s intriguing is that Quest will serve as the exclusive platform for Lightstorm Vision’s mixed reality hardware.
This collaboration is not just about creating groundbreaking stereoscopic content but also aims to empower content creators by enhancing their capability to produce high-quality 3D visuals. This will be achieved through advanced tools and the integration of AI technology.
The seeds of this multi-year partnership were sown when Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, showcased some of the company’s latest hardware innovations to Cameron. "I was blown away by its transformative potential and power, and what this means for content creators around the world," Cameron shared. "I believe we’re at a pivotal moment in history. Working with Meta means we have the chance to equip everyone with the tools to produce, encounter, and relish innovative and breathtaking media forms."
Cameron needs little introduction. He’s the mastermind behind numerous blockbuster hits such as The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Titanic (1997), and of course, Avatar (2009) and its sequels.
Apart from his filmmaking prowess, Cameron is a steadfast advocate for 3D technology. He played a pivotal role in sparking the surge of 3D films in the 2010s with his development of the Fusion Camera System. This technology was crucial in creating the immersive 3D experience in films like Avatar, Tron: Legacy (2010), and Life of Pi (2012).
