Unlike its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the upcoming Rebirth installment won’t feature any downloadable content (DLC). The decision, however, isn’t without reason.
After Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s release, fans began speculating whether there would be DLC similar to what was offered during the wait between Remake and its sequel. Recently, in an interview with the Daily Star, director Naoki Hamaguchi put those speculations to rest. Hamaguchi explained, “We’ve certainly heard the clamor from fans for DLC. I completely understand their interest. But in my view, what fans are really eager to see is the third installment of the series, and they’d prefer it sooner rather than later.”
Though fans voiced their wishes for more content, Hamaguchi continued, “That’s why we’ve chosen to allocate our development resources towards expediting the release of the third game instead of creating additional episodes at this time. So, that’s where all our energy is concentrated right now.” An entirely reasonable approach, if you ask me!
The Yuffie DLC for Remake acted as a smooth transition between the games. Potential candidates like Cid and Vincent Valentine could also stand alone in DLC, but honestly, crafting something substantial from that might be challenging. Particularly regarding Vincent, there’s always the possibility that Square Enix might be prepping a Dirge of Cerberus remaster similar to Crisis Core: Reunion. Here’s hoping for all those Dirge enthusiasts out there!
Earlier this week, our very own Dom had a conversation with Hamaguchi, focusing specifically on his approach to mini-games in the series’ third installment. Rest assured, Hamaguchi has plans to tweak a few aspects. So keep an eye out for some exciting changes!
