Disney has just unveiled a sneak peek at Stitch in their upcoming live-action Lilo and Stitch remake, and it’s both intriguing and a tad unsettling.
Recently, we saw a trailer for another much-loved animated film transitioning into a live-action remake, with How to Train Your Dragon leading the charge. Now, Disney is joining the fray with their own offering. They dropped a quick 30-second teaser that features Stitch playing at being Godzilla, as he rampages through sandcastles, including one designed to mimic the famous Disney castle. Beyond a scene at the end where a CGI Stitch interacts with a floating release date—mark your calendars for May 23, 2025—there’s not much else to see. It’s a pretty minimalist debut look!
The movie’s official description sticks closely to the original storyline. It talks about “the connection between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, engineered for destruction.” Fans will be glad to hear that the original director, Chris Sanders, returns to lend his voice to Stitch, while Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, takes the director’s chair.
As for the rest of the cast, new talent Maia Kealoha steps into the role of Lilo, while Sydney Agudong, from On My Block, plays her older sister Nani. You’ll hear Zach Galifianakis as Jumba, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, and Hannah Waddingham, famed for her role in Ted Lasso, is joining the project too, presumably as the Grand Councilwoman, though her role remains officially undisclosed.
With less than a year to go until its release, a full trailer is not expected to be too far behind. Meanwhile, Disney isn’t slowing down, and they’re eyeing lucrative returns this holiday season with Moana 2 hitting theaters this week.
