Showtime is once again diving into the world of Dexter with an all-new prequel series called “Original Sin,” and they’ve just released the first trailer to give fans a taste of what’s to come.
More than ten years have passed since Dexter ended, but in today’s era of reboots and cherished IPs, bringing this iconic series back has become a priority. Last year, in 2022, viewers were treated to “Dexter: New Blood,” a continuation set a decade after the original’s conclusion. Now, the spotlight shifts to “Dexter: Original Sin,” a prequel series from Paramount and Showtime, with its first trailer now available for fans. Before you delve into the trailer, a word of caution: the prequel series does intriguingly connect to the sequel, so spoilers from the end of New Blood might slip through. Consider yourself warned!
In the trailer, you’ll spot a few poignant moments from the finale of New Blood, where Dexter is seen sprawled in the snow, his own blood surrounding him after being shot by his son, Harrison. During the subsequent hospital scenes, the series takes a look back at Dexter’s past life, setting the stage for this prequel adventure. According to the official plot description, “Dexter: Original Sin” transports us to Miami in 1991, where we follow Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson, as he evolves from a mere student into a righteous serial killer. His growing, uncontrollable urge for bloodshed pushes him to embrace his darker side.
With the steady hand of his father, Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater, Dexter is introduced to a moral Code, crafted to help him target individuals worthy of removal from society, all while flying under law enforcement’s radar. This poses a unique challenge for young Dexter, who simultaneously starts an internship with the Miami Metro Police Department’s forensics team.
Fans will be delighted to know that Michael C. Hall returns as Dexter, lending his voice through narratives woven into the prequel. Adding to the star power, Sarah Michelle Gellar, famed for her role in “Buffy,” makes a special guest appearance. And while being a prequel assures us nothing too dire happens to Dexter, it still promises to be an engaging journey.
Interestingly, this series might shed light on Dexter’s fate at the end of New Blood. With another sequel in the pipeline, titled “Resurrection,” speculation arises about whether we’ll see Dexter awaken, alive and kicking. But for those answers, you’ll have to wait until the show premieres on Paramount+ on December 13.
